 Inline skates are a type of roller skate characterized by 2,3 or 4 wheels in a line as opposed to the quad skate which has a configuration of 2 wheels front and 2 wheels back. The early years of roller skating were dominated by the traditional four wheel skate and it wasn't until the 1980's that advances in skate technology led to the current popularity of these highly versatile roller skates. Today you can select from inline recreational skates, Inline fitness skates, aggressive skates or racing skates plus inline artistic skates for adult or youth. Most recreational and fitness skates feature a soft boot for greater comfort while the other disciplines prefer a harder boot, both for protection against impact and for better control of the skate.
